When it comes to lyrics for dream a little dream of me, there are many different versions. Some of the more popular ones are by Cass Elliot with the Mamas and the Papas and later Anita Harris. Other artists have also recorded this song, including the Mills Brothers, Sylvie Vartan, Henry Mancini, The Beautiful South, Anne Murray, and even Erasure and Michael Bublé.
The song’s composers, Fabian Andre and Wilber Schwandt, claimed that they wrote the music during a 10-minute break at a gig in Paw Paw, Michigan. However, there’s some confusion as to the exact date of its creation. Schwandt once said that he composed the song in 1930, while Andre claims that it was written in 1931.
In the original version, the narrator Eddie is heard speaking in the intro: “And now, to sing this lovely ballad, here is Mama Cass”. If you listen closely to the single, you can hear Cass clear her throat before she starts singing.
A cover version by children’s entertainers Sharon, Lois & Bram was recorded in 1995 and included on their album Let’s Dance!. Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebo sang a version on her 1990 album Gift of Love. The song was recorded in French by Henry Mancini for his 1969 album A Warm Shade of Ivory, and by the French singer Enzo Enzo as “Les Yeux Ouverts”.
Robbie Williams released a cover version on his 2013 album Swings Both Ways. Korean pianist Yiruma released a version on his 2001 album First Love: Piano Collection. The song was used for the opening and closing credits of the 2010 Jude Law movie Repo Men.
