Fenbendazole or “FenBen” is a widely used anthelmintic in the broad-spectrum class of benzimidazole carbamate anthelmintics. This family of drugs has been in use as anthelmintics for nearly six decades. Fenbendazole is a member of the benzimidazole carbamate group and is an effective worm killer. This drug is often found in dewormers for dogs and is marketed as Panacur C.

In the EMT6 tumor growth experiments, a 3-d course of fenbendazole (50 mg/kg/day, i.p.) did not alter the rate of tumor volume increase or the number of spontaneous lung metastases at necropsy. These results are consistent with a previous study involving diet-fed fenbendazole (20 mg/kg/day, i.p.) in a similar experiment in BALB/c mice (9).
Irradiation of the tumors with 10 Gy of X-rays produced a significant inhibition of their growth, and this response was not altered by the addition of fenbendazole. In cell culture studies, 2-h treatments of the cells with fenbendazole did not affect their survival, but 24-h treatment reduced the surviving fractions by 0.18+-0.02.
