For example, reserves are typically in areas with limited resources and access to these resources is often regulated by the government. Despite these difficulties, there are programs designed to help residents of on-reserve communities to secure financing for construction or renovations to their homes. These programs often include CMHC loans, which are guaranteed by the federal government.

Aside from the housing challenges that reserve communities encounter, these homes are also often more expensive than homes on non-reserve lands. This can lead to higher utility bills and an increased burden on families.

The lack of enthusiasm for living on a reserve is a problem that affects not only First Nations people but all Indian and Indigenous people across the country. The 2006 census found that fully 57 per cent of Natives lived off-reserve, up from just over 55 percent in 2001.

That’s a huge difference! Those on-reserve people earned nearly $8,400 more than their off-reserve counterparts.

This is especially true when it comes to housing costs, where the average cost of an on-reserve home is $41,200. That’s more than double the average cost of a home on non-reserve land.

On-reserve homes also tend to be smaller than off-reserve homes. Fortunately, some First Nations communities are working to address this issue through development and improvement projects on their reserves.
