Thermal Paste Application – How to Apply Thermal Paste Correctly

Heat management is one of the most important parts of constructing or maintaining your computer, especially if you are overclocking. Having too much heat can kill your sensitive components, and a lack of it will slow down or even freeze your system. Knowing how to apply thermal paste correctly is the first step to proper CPU cooling.

A well-applied thermal paste will facilitate the transfer of heat between the processor and the heat sink, resulting in an efficient cooling solution. Many different application methods exist, and the best method depends on your experience level and the type of thermal paste you are using. For example, some liquid metal compounds are electrically conductive and require extra care to avoid shorting out your motherboard or CPU.

Regardless of the application method you choose, it is always important to spread the thermal paste evenly. This will ensure a smooth and thin layer that maximizes heat conduction. To achieve this, use a plastic spreader (never cotton buds) to work the thermal paste into the surface of the heatsink. Then, use a light to check for any areas where the thermal paste is not fully spread.

When applying the thermal paste, make sure to keep your hands away from both the heatsink and the surface of the CPU. This will reduce the amount of oil transferred to the surfaces, which could negatively impact the transfer of heat. Also, be careful when handling the paste as it can easily smear or spill out of the container. Thermal paste application
